Bringing your Teacup Puppy or Dog to your Home
When you bring your teacup home, you are very excited about the new addition to your family, but he is likely to be stressed. Think about why – you have taken him away from his mother and siblings and also his breeder, and they have been his entire world since he was born. Now he is in this new place with a new person where everything is different, and it’s going to take some getting used to – both for him and for you!
You’ll want your teacup puppy to feel comfortable and at home when he gets to your house. Our primary sense is sight, but your dog’s primary sense is smell, so you want to make his new home smell similar to his old one. Take two or three cloth towels and ask the breeder to rub the towels on her arms and hands. Then rub the towels on your puppy’s littermates and on his mother. If you are picking him up in the car or if he is being shipped to you, put one towel in his crate so he can take with him all the smells that are familiar to him. Expect that he will pee or poop on it — that’s why you have one or two spares! Put one of the spares in his bed when you put him to sleep at night.
Establish a Routine for your Teacup Puppy or Dog
When you get a teacup puppy, it is going to change your life and routine. Your puppy will settle into your home quicker if you have planned a routine so he knows what to expect from you and looks to you as a leader. The first few days (or weeks) will be kind of hectic, and you’ll both be adjusting, so it’s trial and error as to what works and what doesn’t for you. Be consistent and try to set a schedule of when he does what – eat, sleep, potty, play, etc. so he knows what to expect.

Keep him on the same food that he’s used to, and if possible, use the same water source. If that’s not possible, then use bottled water.
Be sure to have Nutri-Cal or a similar product on hand for any hypoglycemic episode. Watch for any signs of fatigue or stress.
Take him to the vet for a checkup within three days after he comes home, but don’t give him any vaccines yet because he’s had a lot of changes in a very short period and needs time to adjust.
